ULTREIA!!!

102_3969

As we are nearing the end of the year remembering many wonderful CAMINO experiences I would like to wish everyone ULTREIA!!!  Ultreia or Ultreyal is an ancient Galician sentiment amongst pilgrims with its origins derived from the Latin word ultra.  A wish of unfailing courage shared between pilgrims encouraging them to continue their journey of discovery and adventure.

Wishing you continued strength to go after and achieve your dreams and may 2014 be all that you want it to be:

E ultreïa                            Lets go farther,!

E suseïa                             Lets go higher!

Feliz Navidad y Feliz Año Nuevo – ULTREIA!!!

A Quaint Village On The Camino – Villafranca del Bierzo

iglesia_francisco_villafranca_bierzo_t2400612.jpg_1306973099

Villafranca del Bierzo is a picturesque medieval village just 187 KM from Santiago de Compostela and is located between the historic templar city of Ponferrada and O Cebreiro the gateway to Galicia. In the middle ages, Villafranca was first mentioned in 791 and then in the 9th century was a resting place for pilgrims.

In 1070, during the reign of Alfonse VI of Leon a monastery was founded here to cultivate wine and a borough of french pilgrims rose up around it which gave the town its name and meaning – Villafranca = “French Town”.

This medieval village is dominated by a massive still-inhabited feudal-fortress and is a great place to stroll the streets soaking up the quaint architecture and enjoy some of the local traditional cuisine and wine.

While strolling this quaint village you might want to visit the Romanesque Church of Santiago to see the Puerta del Perdon (Door of Pardon) – it was a sort of spiritual consolation prize for exhausted pilgrims who couldn’t make it over the mountains and onto Santiago de Compostela.

El Juego De La Oca – The Game of the Goose & The Camino

juego-de-la-oca-del-camino-de-santiago

El Juego De La Oca is another wonderful surprise and new experience of discovery along The Way of Saint James adding to the mystery and the history that makes the Camino so unique.  Have fun seeing what you will learn and uncover of the hidden treasures and secrets of Galicia and the Camino!!!

“The Game of the Goose or Goose game is a board game with uncertain origins. Some people connect the game with the Phaistos Disc (because of its spiral shape), others claim that it was originally a gift from Francesco I de’ Medici of Florence to KingPhilip II of Spain sometime between 1574 and 1587, while the latest theories attribute to the Templars the creation of the game. According to these theories the Templars, possibly inspired by other games or discs (as the Phaistos Disc) from the Holy Land, developed a game and a secret or encrypted guide to the Way of St. James, representing each numbered space in the game a different stage in this journey. Furthermore, the hidden messages would not be just in the game but in themonumentscathedrals and churches along the Way to Santiago de Compostela.” – Wikipedia

The Spirit Is Totally Free – Berit Michaela

071

Remembering my first day in Vilei, September 2011, at German Limeres’s family country home where he was having a fantastic Galician Barbecoa with his friends and documenting the pilgrims for his Rexistro 108 Vilei Pilgrim Photography Project always fills me with happiness and  renewed inspiration.  I was fortunate to be invited and was able to capture more pictures and video of pilgrim’s sharing their camino experiences.  It was a truly magical day sharing it with so many wonderful people and pilgrims.

Meeting Berit and Johanna as they were making their way to Santiago was extra special for me as the day was truly unique and a first time always holds extra special memories.  Berit and Johanna are also from Germany near my families historic home town so it was more synchronicities for me of the Camino and to my families heritage. A perfect day filled with incredible people from around the world and an amazing experience was the perfect combination for deepening my passion and love for the Camino!  Thank you Berit for sharing some of your camino reflections and for providing me a wonderful memory on the Camino.  We look forward to your return – Bo Camiño!

“Experiences about the camino:

The first kilometers were very hard. Every part of your body hurts all the time. But later I find a good way to go the right tempo. And you look around you, everywhere beatiful landscapes…the spirit is totally free. The camino was very special to me, I make a big changing. And now life is more easier for me! I really wan´t to go the camino once again!”

The Smiles Say It ALL! – Tara & Mick

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

I have been blessed in meeting so many special people as part of my own personal camino journey. Each person holds a unique place in my heart and has contributed in an unbelievable way to this adventure and its continued unfoldment in my life.  Such was another very incredible day in Santiago de Compostela which always holds a special place in my spirit but always even more wonderful when shared with new pilgrim friends Tara and Mick whom I met through another pilgrim friend Marc. We shared a great time at O Beiro Vinoteca discussing the camino enjoying some delicious wine — a perfect setting and camino connection.

I love hearing of people’s synchronicities and their personal stories of “WHY” the Camino.  Tara and Mick were kind to share their story with me.  I am excited to share it with you as a series of blog posts that are inspiring and show the amazing transformative power it has in our lives.  Thank you Tara and Mick for a very special time in Santiago de Compostela and for continuing our pilgrim friendship through sharing your camino journey with me and others. Bo Camiño!

“After living in London for 6 months it was time for a holiday. For Mick’s birthday I surprised him and booked a trip to Spain, I had only booked the flights the rest we would work out along the way… we ended up in Pamplona one week before the running of the bulls the town was in a buzz, it was such a beautiful place. It was here that I noticed the ‘Pilgrims’ walking through town and all the yellow arrows everywhere. I was so intrigued! I started asking around and learnt more and more about The Way.

So how all great plans start… We sat with a bottle of wine Mick and I talked and laughed at the thought of actually doing this… Could I really walk all that way? How do you do it… Is it safe?

Arriving back in London had just confirmed to us that we needed change. After 2 days back at work I had handed in my notice. Coincidently the lease on our flat was due to end in 1 month. So it was decided we would walk the Camino and it would lead us to where we wanted to be. We organised most of our belonging to be send back to Australia and left a few things at a friend’s house.

We had no idea what to expect so for the next month I read as much as I could about the Camino. I learnt so much…How many people have waited much of their adult life to walk the Camino, the stories of why people were walking and the history of the Camino. It was so interesting…I was drawn in and it was all I could think about. We were very fortunate to have the opportunity to do it, but I guess that is the way of the Camino when you are ready it will call you.

After finishing the Camino we returned to London to collect our few possessions…We had applied for 2 jobs and got them both the next day. The first was to do a Ski Season the French Alps as a chalet host and driver. This was one thing Mick really wanted to do while we were over here for the 2 years… and I had never seen snow so I was nervous and excited at the same time! The position started in 7 weeks so we still had to do something in the mean time. The second was for a Au pair couple live in position in beautiful English country side… it was meant to be a year contract, during our phone interview I had to say we have been offered this amazing opportunity in France which will be starting in 7 weeks but we can work for a few weeks for you if you want someone.. She took us! ” – Tara
