El Camino de Santiago de Compostela – is also known as the Field of Stars from the word Compostela.  As pilgrims made their way under the stars of the Milky Way lighting the sky and guiding their way. For centuries pilgrims have ventured in nature away from their homelands to cross countries and oceans to experience their connection with God’s Divine Universe.  I am sure the planets and stars were reassuring friends along their journey lighting the way and adding to their experience.

In Galicia – we will experience the Pink Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse –

The spanish love to be outside and this is especially true for people in Galicia.  After a long and rainy winter what better than to spend a day outside enjoying a camino adventure!

This saturday people will gather together and participate in a day of the Ruta de Mino walking 9 km beginning at the Church of Santo Estevo.  A perfect setting combining mountains, valleys and the River Mino.  A fun day for all!

El Monasterio de Santa Maria de Sobrado dos Monxes

IMG04169-20130317-1553

The Monastery of Santa Maria of Sobrado dos Monxes, is located in the area of Melide in the province of A Caruna in the town named Sobrado dos Monxes which means Monks.  Founded in the tenth century by counts of the family Presaras. In the twelfth century, in the times of Alfonso VII the Emperor who was the true champion of the Cistercian Order and became apart of the white monks. Later it became a part of the Congregation of Castile XXXX and averted destruction when it was purchased by Cardinal Paya.

IMG04121-20130317-1512

It is a dramatic structure with cloisters and is situated in a beautiful valley – a perfect peaceful setting. It interior is almost empty which makes for a truly unique experience.

IMG04122-20130317-1513

Walls covered with green moss and wind blowing outside makes for some interesting sounds inside adding to the mystical experience as we made our way inside to explore.

IMG04122-20130317-1513

A solitary medieval tomb lays inside – on our next visit will be interesting to learn more of who this is and why it still remains.

IMG04123-20130317-1513

The church of the Monastery is a magnificent Baroque building (XVII century) style with Romanesque form.

IMG04125-20130317-1515

The monastery contains three cloister areas; The Pilgrims Hospice or the Processional, and finally the so-called Great Cloister.

IMG04129-20130317-1517

Having visited quite a few cathedrals, monasteries and churches this was an incredibly unique adventure – the setting was just right with sunshine and the heavy winds made for the experience of sound that we captured on video (maybe another post for you to experience personally)

IMG04145-20130317-1529

We were given a private tour by a pilgrim who had been staying there helping at the monastery for a week.  Next time we visit it will be for vespers to hear the singing as I imagine it is quite magical in this setting to experience Gregorian Chants in just such a place.

IMG04168-20130317-1550

Our tour included visiting the historic kitchen – what was interesting is that not only was it one total room but in this case the center contained one massive area for an open fire – the largest I have ever seen.

IMG04163-20130317-1545

At one time there were 80 – 100 monks who lived here – now there are approximately 20. It can support up to 200 pilgrims during the busy camino season when the weather invites all the enjoy nature, walking, making new friends and discovering history and secret treasures of Galicia.

IMG04164-20130317-1547

It is an incredible setting to enjoy – next time a picnic on the grounds watching the cows graze I think will make for a perfect afternoon and more exploring!

IMG04172-20130317-1606

More fascinating history, culture, legends and myths to be discovered as we continue our travels in Galicia – hope you will join us!

Castro De Viladonga – Museum

yacim_2127-Castro%20de%20Viladonga%20y%20su%20Museo%20anex%20o%20

Castro De Viladonga hillfort settlement, located less than a half an hour from my current hometown of Lugo – Galicia (northern Spain), dates back to the late Roman Era(between the III and V centuries A.D.) and has been a key site for studying and learning about the evolution of Hillfort Culture in the Galician-Roman era.

IMG04366-20130417-1906

The hill fort consists of several enclosures with walls and moats (up to four on the east side), two outer hill forts or areas for expansion yet to be thoroughly excavated and in one of which is the entrance to a cave and large central crown or interior acropolis which is where the majority of the constructions unearthed to date lie.

IMG04375-20130417-1915

Set to the sides are two pathways which cross the hill fort from North to South and East to West and by an interior circular path parallel to the main wall which work as thoroughfares or areas for walking which today can be used (just like the wall) for visiting the site.

IMG04373-20130417-1914

The buildings sometimes are in groups or complex units and others make up groups of two or three dwellings, together with one or several annexes in the form of shelters or storehouses, areas for domestic work and crafts, stables or yards for animals. etc.

IMG04359-20130417-1902

In other cases the constructions are complete but individuals, used as dwelling places, or as a place for communal or social use (I am sure many fun festivities and celebrations took place in what would have been an original local bar, restaurant, or party hall).

IMG04358-20130417-1901

There are also remains of other incomplete buildings or unattached walls. We can also see entrance stairs, small atria, hearth places, fonts or channels dug into bare rock, holes for inserting posts, etc.

IMG04369-20130417-1908

The hill fort is open on a permanent basis and it is an incredible experience to walk the walls and enjoy the setting which was inhabited so long ago.  Its natural landscape and sloping hills you can see made for a perfect place to develop a settlement providing them the opportunity to create within the landscape a fortified walled enclosure for living with mote outside adding protection.

IMG04368-20130417-1907

The archaeological importance and historical interest of the Castro de Viladonga hillfort include the quantity and quality of the artifacts which have turned up, along with the interest to do research and exhibit the findings in its natural setting led to the Ministry of Culture in 1983 to set up The Castro De Viladonga Museum.

IMG04353-20130417-1849

The museum was constructed in 1976 – 1978 and had major extension work and modernization of the installations which was carried out in 1992 – 1994.

IMG04351-20130417-1845

Many interesting and unique artifacts can be seen to understand a little more about what their living conditions and environment were like.

IMG04352-20130417-1849

There has existed since 1989 an Association of Friends of the Viladonga Hillfort which has as its main aims to promote and spread cultural, scientific and educational activities at the museum, as well as to promote the protection and knowledge of the site and of Cultural Heritage in general.

IMG04357-20130417-1858

It was another incredibly fascinating and interesting Camino Adventure – as we traveled in time back to the III – V Roman – Galician era A.D. Thank you Marisa for another fantastic day discovering more of Galicia!!!

IMG04378-20130417-1924

Hope you will join us to experience more of the secret treasures of Galicia while we discover, learn and explore more of this amazing culture and unique land.

“Everything Happens For A Reason”

peridoco 4

Hi Susan,

Once you have done the camino you will always want to go back: it’s like a virus that remains with you. Only people who have been there will understand. I long to do another camino: maybe from Valencia or through Portugal. And I still want to bike to Rome. Those are dreams, but once my trip to Santiago from Haarlem in Holland was a dream too.
Anyway, at the time it meant a whole lot to me. It was putting behind me an emotional period: becoming a grandmother, the passing away of my mother-in-law, moving from where we had been living more than 30 years, moving my parents to a place where they could have some more care. All these things sort of make you take stock of your life and make you realize that you’ve got a major part of your life behind you. When I was riding my bike all these thoughts came to mind and at the same time I realized how blessed I am. Also the thought came to mind that the time of harvest had come after all the years of hard work. It was literally getting away from all the day-to-day chores and worries. But it was not an escape. Part of it was that I wanted to prove to myself that I could do it, part seeing all the wonderful things along the way that make you feel humble, human, vulnerable…
When you’re on a bike you don’t meet as many people as the pilgrims on foot, but the encounters I had made a lasting impression.
And yes, more and more on my journey I got the conviction that things in life happen for a reason.
Would that apply to my life as it is now, I wonder. I’m working hard again, but am also busy with fun things. Life seems to be too full
and I would love to be on the road again. Maybe not to Santiago right away, a short trip around Holland would be good too. But some day I will embark on another true pilgrimage: to experience once again the freedom I felt going to Santiago…
Well, these were just some thoughts. I hope they are of any use. Thanks for the picture and when I was looking at, it the moments we shared there instantly came to mind again. I’m glad I met you,
take care, Marjan
Thank you Marjan for sharing some of your thoughts and camino experiences.  It was such a pleasure to meet you and you were the first pilgrim I met when I came to visit and experience German photographing the pilgrims in his families historic house in Vilei 108 KM to Santiago – your words “Everything Happens For A Reason” resonated with me so much with all the synchronistic and God Guided experiences I have had.  It was through a very specific series of events that you know led me to be there that day in perfect timing to meet you and share some special moments on the Camino – I look forward to sharing more together in the future!
 Sending Smiles from Spain,
Susan

Living In Gratitude!

The CAMINO has a way of providing just what you need when you need it.  You feel that God and the whole Universe is supporting you always showing you in some way from small to large that you are loved, cared for, that you matter in an incredible way to the world and to others.  The CAMINO helps us to learn what is important to our Spirits to live Full and Happy Lives – BEING what we were meant to BE and Experience.  The CAMINO helps us to learn how to ask for our needs to be met, expect that we will be guided and taken care of, and learn to BELIEVE IN THE BEST LIFE HAS TO OFFER WHILE LIVING IN GRATITUDE FOR EVERYTHING!!!

Freedom and Jeff
Freedom and I have been together 11 years this summer.
She came in as a baby in 1998 with two broken wings.
Her left wing doesn’t open all the way even after surgery,
it was broken in 4 places.
She’s my baby.

When Freedom came in she could not stand
and both wings were broken. She was
emaciated and covered in lice. We made the
decision to give her a chance at life, so I took
her to the vet’s office. >From then
on, I was always around her. We had her in a
huge dog carrier with the top off, and it
was loaded up with shredded newspaper for her to
lay in. I used to sit and talk to her,
urging her to live, to fight; and she would lay
there looking at me with those big brown eyes.
We also had to tube feed her for weeks.

This went on for 4-6 weeks, and by then she still
couldn’t stand. It got to the point where the
decision was made to euthanize her
if she couldn’t stand in a week. You know you don’t
want to cross that line between torture and
rehab, and it looked like death was
winning. She was going to be put
down that Friday, and I was supposed to come in
on that Thursday afternoon. I didn’t want to go
to the center that Thursday, because I couldn’t
bear the thought of her being euthanized;
but I went anyway, and when I walked in everyone
was grinning from ear to ear. I went
immediately back to her cage; and there she was,
standing on her own, a big beautiful
eagle. She was ready to live. I was
just about in tears by then. That
was a very good day.

We knew she could never fly, so the director
asked me to glove train her.
I got her used to the glove,
and then to jesses, and we started
doing education programs for schools
in western Washington .
We wound up in the newspapers,
radio (believe it or not) and some
TV. Miracle Pets even did a show
about us.

In the spring of 2000, I was diagnosed with
non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. I had stage 3,
which is not good (one major organ plus
everywhere), so I wound up doing 8 months of
chemo. Lost the hair – the whole
bit. I missed a lot of work. When I
felt good enough, I would go to Sarvey
and take Freedom out for walks. Freedom would
also come to me in my dreams and help me fight
the cancer. This happened time and time again.

Fast forward to November 2000

the day after Thanksgiving,
I went in for my last checkup.
I was told that if the cancer was not
all gone after 8 rounds of chemo, then my last
option was a stem cell transplant. Anyway, they
did the tests; and I had to come back Monday for
the results. I went in Monday, and I was
told that all the cancer was gone.

Mail Attachment
So the first thing I did was get up to Sarvey and
take the big girl out for a walk. It was misty
and cold. I went to her flight and jessed her
up, and we went out front to the top of the
hill. I hadn’t said a word to
Freedom, but somehow she knew. She looked at me
and wrapped both
her wings around me to where I
could feel them pressing in on my back
(I was engulfed in eagle wings), and she
touched my nose with her beak and stared into my
eyes, and we just stood there like that
for I don’t know how long . That was a
magic moment. We have been soul mates ever
since she came in. This is a very special bird.

On a side note: I have had people who
were sick come up to us when we are out, and
Freedom has some kind of hold on
them. I once had a guy who was
terminal come up to us and
I let him hold her.
His knees just about buckled and he
swore he could feel her power course through his
body. I have so many stories like that..

I never forget the honor I have of being so close
to such a magnificent spirit as
Freedom.

Hope you enjoyed this!

But they that wait upon the Lord

shall renew their strength;
they shall mount up with wings as eagles;
they shall run, and not be weary;
and they shall walk, and not faint.
Isaiah 40:31
